I have been struggling for a few years now on approaches to the issue of arbitrary gaps in Ulam numbers - I have tried software brute force (hardly satisfying), theoretical including variations on vector space analysis (yes, there are possibilities - it's one of those, if you have to ask, then you just don't know!)- to no avail. If only Erdos was still with us....
